Meet My Son Redux

Story taken from The Beginning Part 3

The Castle Acorn, the center of Mobotropolis. Sir Charles stands before the King Acorn, Rosie stands beside him, Bonnie stands in the courtroom with them, her son Sonic standing next to her, the Princess Sally stands next to her father.

The room is silent, the King speaks first,"So, what you're saying Charles, is that for the past five years, you've kept a child secret from this court to allow you to raise him?"

"Yes, your highness."

Bonnie tried to speak up on Charles behalf, but the King raised a hand to silence her,"Because our legal system would have taken just as long to allow you to adopt the child, you wanted to wait until he could speak for himself, correct?"

Charles nodded,"Yes, your highness."

Rosie stepped closer to Charles,"Your Highness, he wasn't alone-"

Charles looked to her,"Rosie, don't-"

"Charles, shush."

The King covered his mouth and coughed to disguise a small chuckle,"Yes, well, let's hear what the child has to say then?"

Charles stepped to the side slowly, revealing a small blue hedgehog boy, clutching a yellow hand made blanket tight against himself, fear and shyness glowed in his large brown eyes as he dashed behind Charles again. Rosie leant over, slowly bringing the child out from behind Charles,"It's alright, don't be afraid young one."

The King stared at the young boy,"And, this is your son, Sir Charles?"

"Yes."

"Did you have the good sense to marry the woman?"

Bonnie covered her mouth. Rosie had to turn away, she couldn't supress a laugh. Charles smiled weakly,"It's...not by blood, highness."

The King smiled, looking at the shy boy,"Well child, step forward."

The young blue hedgehog stepped forward, clutching the blanket, obviously an object of comfort to the child, he stopped short of the throne. The King stood and stepped down and stood in front of him and leant down,"Are you afraid, young one?"

The child shook his head. The King smiled,"You don't fear your King?"

The child shook his head again. The King smiled,"Why not? I hold all the power in the kingdom, and it'd be so easy for me to be mean enough to take you away from your father."

"You can't do that."

The King smiled,"Oh really, child, so then, tell me why not?"

The child made a fist with one hand and raised it up,"Cause I'll give ya one of these."

The King couldn't help chuckling,"My, we're a spirited one. But I'd never do something so mean, I am a fair King, but I would like to know how life has been for you little one, has your daddy been a good one?"

The young hedgehog nodded,"Yes, but daddy can't cook, so mama Rosie hasta."

The King looked up to Rosie and cocked an eyebrow,"MAMA Rosie?"

Rosie coughed into her fist,"It's not like THAT your highness, it's, I've...Charles needed help."

The King looked back to the youth,"What's your father like?"

"Daddy is the smartest man in the whole world, and he takes good care of me and never yells. I don't like time out though."

The King nodded,"Yes, I don't like time out either. But your father is good to you, that's what matters here. Sir Charles?"

Charles stepped forward,"Yes, you're highness?"

"Custody granted. Your 'son' has some serious spunk to him, I wouldn't be surpised if he became a knight of the kingdom one day!"

Rosie looked away in thought,(* Yes, I wouldn't be surprised, though I wonder if he'll live that long? *)

Bonnie noticed the worried look on Rosie's face, but before she could speak, the King's voice came up again.

"What's your name, lad?" he said, patting the youth on his head.

The child smiled at the King,"Base Azure Hedgehog."

The King stood,"I'll be watching you closely to see if you're Knight material little one! Go forth and do great good for your fellow Mobians."

Base put his blanket over his shoulder and walked back to Charles and Rosie. Charles smiled,"Thank you, your majesty."

Charles turned to leave with his family and Rosie when the King's voice came up once again,"Sir Charles, Sally would like to go with Base and Sonic to play, I have a meeting with Julian to attend to."

"We'd be happy to take her with us, your highness." Rosie said.

The King smiled,"Excellent, and Charles? Rosie?"

The two looked to the King. The King smiled at them, a different smile, a sly smile,"Keep me updated on things."

The two looked at eachother, turned a light red and looked away, Rosie stuttered out,"O-of course, majesty."

With that the group left, the princess running out after them after giving her father a goodbye hug. The King sat on his throne and smiled,"They'll be good parents for the boy."
